The Rad Black Kids have a design aesthetic that involves patches last manufactured in the 1960's. What makes these patches unique is the use of a machine known as a Schiffli, a multi needle embroidery machine, invented by Isaak Gröbli. The familiarity of these high quality, plant based dye patches serve as a reminder of high quality familiarity we all are acquainted with. I grew up in Zimbabwe and my grandmother often had all sorts of these patches adorned on her clothes or gathered around her home. Using these patches that shall no longer be made again as Schifflis are largely not utilized anymore, evokes a feeling of yesteryear.
